With Easter upon me, and contemplating the 'real' reason for those hot cross buns, I've come the the conclusion that neither God not the Devil controls Death. I haven't settled on exactly how or what determines when we die yet, but i have a few theories.
Firstly let me share with you why it is not God or His rival.
If it were up to the Devil, people would die as soon as they sinned - and trust me, given the original 7 deadly sins, I would have been dead a long time ago. (I'm not even going to get started on the new ones! I just thank my parents and my own intelligence that I am not Catholic).
Let's face it, Lucifer has no morals or beliefs in giving people another shot, he (allegedly) is trying to build an army and needs as many souls that he can get his hands on, so if he were in control of Death, people would barely have a chance to be caught by any coppers before suffering a massive stroke and dying in the street.
Now, even if God was an eternal optimist, which given he is all powerful, I'm willing to concede to, don't believe he is in control of Death either. If he was in control of Death, then you would have one of 2 scenarios:
1. all good people would die and the child fatality rate would skyrocket.
2. All Sinners would remain alive to be given the chance at redemption and as soon as they repented they would die - this would keep our prison numbers down.
none of this rings true for me, I think that Death is a whole separate entity, and there is no point pleading with him, as he is just an entity doing his job, dictated by a book that was presented to him at the beginning of time by the now elusive Destiny.
